About The Event

Experience Kalari: Coffs Coast Workshop

ANCIENT INDIAN MARTIAL ARTS - Kalaripayattu (Kalari) is India's ancient indigenous martial, meditational & medicinal tradition that evolved alongside Yoga & Ayurveda, originating from Kerala in South India. It is a complete system of body-oriented therapy with an emphasis on the expansion and development of the senses; a paradigm commonly called 'when the body becomes all eyes'.

Kalari gives us a framework for understanding how we exist in the world and practical guidelines to harmonize ourselves with our ever changing inner and outer environments. The asanas and forms are multidimensional, incorporating concepts of power and focus - allowing us to feel a closer connection to our ancestral animal and warrior lineages.

Who is this for: Adults of all ages and abilities interested in unique and learning new (...ancient) ways to move. All movements can be modified to suit different fitness levels.

DATE: Sunday 22nd March 2020

TIME: 10am - 12pm

LOCATION: CrossFit Woolgoolga! 2/4 Bosworth Rd, Woolgoolga NSW 2456

DURATION: 2 hours

Experience all elements of a traditional practice. Unique flowing movements within warms ups, core strengthening and kick sequences as well as more complex postures/Mudras, evasive moves and the first form - Kalari Vandanam Salutation Vinyasa. These can be practised until the next workshop by incorporating them into existing exercise routines or creating new rituals to energise and strength the body/mind.

Any questions please contact

The practice of Kalaripayattu is enjoying a revival in Kerela, meanwhile for the rest of the world it remains relatively lost in history. There are very few people in Australia whom are initiated in this traditional practice and of them, only a handful are teaching! Lalita and Karen are passionate about sharing this knowledge with the wider community - more information about the instructors will be posted in the discussion page soon!

About the Instructor

Kalari Practitioner & Advanced Gymnastics Coach

Karen spent majority of her life competing and later teaching gymnastics to both kids and more recently, running an adult gymnastics program in Melbourne. Searching for a more spiritual connection to exercise, she found some wonderful yoga teachers (Sian Pascale/Sammy JoHand) who opened up a whole new world of focused and purposeful movement, pranayama and mediation. A few years later at a community yoga event that she met Lalita who demonstrated an introduction to Kalari. Instantly in love with the dynamic use of strength, flexibility and personal power - it took everything she adored about yoga and brought it back towards her first love…acrobatics. Always practising with an emphasis on movement mastery and the philosophy of ‘seeing with the whole body’.
